The National Archive building preserves the files of France since Merovingiens until 1958. To the files of the organizations and establishments of Ancien Régime removed with the Revolution, were added to the centuries the files of the police headquarters of the State, of the private archives and the minutes of the Parisian notaries. The Public records are installed in the Marais district, around the princely hotels of Soubise and Rohan. The consultation of the documents is carried out with the CARAN, research and reception centre inaugurated in 1988.
